Hispanic Heritage Art Contest

Just yesterday Reagan received an award for her entry into the Hispanic Heritage Art Contest. It seems kind of odd that my kid would have won third prize since we're not Hispanic, and I don't know much of anything about Hispanic Heritage, but she and her friend Lacey entered the contest last year and won third prize. The ceremony was yesterday at the Dallas Public Library.

I'm not sure if she entered because the project was assigned to her or because she chose to do it, but I do recall her working on the painting at the end of the last school year. I had no idea at the time that it was for a contest, though, and I was even more surprised when we received the letter saying that she had won third prize. Even at that point, though, I figured it wasn't really a big deal and that she would probably just get a certificate or something. When they told us yesterday that there had been over 4,000 entries, I was a little more impressed with third prize, and when they gave Reagan and brand new Nikon digital camera, I had to admit that it was a bigger deal than I thought. Dad came out and took some pictures, so I'll try to post that later so you can see her winning entry.

In the meantime, let me just say that the Dallas Public Library is not a place where I want to spend very many Sunday afternoons. I think that all of the homeless of Dallas were there either watching a movie in the kids area or taking baths in the sinks. I had to use the restroom while I was there, and I must admit that it was quite disturbing to hear a zipper go down behind me while I'm trying to do my business. I was like, "Look, buddy, I think you've got the wrong restroom. There are not any politicians in here, and I haven't tapped my foot a single time."

You didn't really think I could do a whole post without at least one funny line, did you?
